Dayleen Marrero and Andrew Taylor were about to get married when tragedy struck. On Friday, the day of their wedding, their Chicago apartment caught fire, destroying nearly everything inside, The Chicago Tribune reports.
Taylor, who was in the building when the fire broke out, knocked on the doors of more than 20 neighbors, grabbed his tuxedo and his dog, and ran. He left everything else behind, including their wedding rings, marriage license, a ceremony reading, and all their prized possessions.
Despite it all, they ended up tying the knot that night as planned. They used an uncle's wedding ring and Marrero's engagement ring instead, and helped a groomsman get something to wear after the fire destroyed his tuxedo. "It was the saddest I've ever been in my whole life, and I was the happiest as well," Marrero told the Tribune.
Things didn't really sink in until the next day, when they had to put their life back together. For now, they're staying on a friend's couch until they can get back into their building. Newser reports that they're raising money on GoFundMe to take care of living expenses, and donors have given more than $8,000 in just one day.
