Estela Meléndez, 91, has carried a fetus in her uterus for over 60 years, CNN reports. Meléndez visited doctors in her small Chilean town to get an X-ray. It was then that the doctors realized she had been carrying a calcified fetus.
Meléndez says she had noticed a lump in her belly, but had no idea she had ever gotten pregnant. The fetus didn't pose any health risks, which is part of the reason it went unnoticed for more than six decades. Meléndez and her husband (who died earlier this year) struggled with conceiving and never had children. "We suffered tremendously because of this reason," she said.
Doctors decided not to operate on Meléndez, because it would he too much of a health risk. Meléndez is fine with that, because she says it only hurts occasionally. And she says it also reminds her of her late husband and their struggles to have children.
